Bethalto Boy, 5, Dies After Being Found In Back Yard Swimming Pool

BETHALTO • A 5-year-old boy who was found under water Saturday in a back yard swimming pool apparently drowned, the Madison County coroner said.

Chance M. Shewmake was pronounced dead at 8:31 p.m. at Alton Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said.

Chance had been taken there by rescuers who had tried to resuscitate him after he was found in the pool at his family's home in Bethalto.

Chance's mother had called police about 8 p.m. Saturday because she couldn't find him, Nonn said. Officers found him in the pool.

The coroner said an autopsy on Monday "failed to indicate any overt sign of trauma and the preliminary cause of death appears to be that of drowning."
