Boy, 12, Drowns In Hotel Pool In Fairview Heights

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS • Police are investigating the apparent drowning of a 12-year-old boy in a swimming pool at a hotel here on Tuesday.

Authorities said the boy, from Florida, had gone swimming with his older sister and younger brother at a pool at the Drury Inn, 12 Ludwig Drive, at 10:25 a.m. when he decided to see how long he could hold his breath under water.

The boy remained under water for a couple minutes until relatives pulled him out, according to a police statement.

Police said the victim's father and officers attempted to resuscitate him until emergency crews arrived. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Relatives of the boy said he was a good swimmer. It is unknown why he was unable to come out of the water on his own.

Police said in a statement that while the boy's death is believed to be an accidental drowning, it is under investigation and an autopsy is planned for Wednesday.

The hotel is off Route 159 near Interstate 64.
