A 15-year-old Raisinville Township girl may have drowned while swimming with her two cousins in her above-ground pool in the back yard Friday afternoon.
Some reports say she may have suffered a medical issue that caused her to go under water.
The incident happened about 2:30 p.m., according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The teenager — Gracie Czarnik — had been swimming with her younger cousins — ages 12 and 10 — at her Sheick Rd. home for about an hour when she swam the length of the pool under water and turned around. She made it about half way back when she stopped swimming and never came up for air, the cousins told deputies. The cousins noticed something was wrong and saw that she wasn’t breathing, but were unable initially to pull her body out of the water, according to a sheriff’s report. One of the cousins called Gracie’s grandmother, who in turn, called her father.
When the father arrived, the cousins had managed to pull her body out and laid her on her back on the pool deck. The father performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his daughter, who vomited at first, but who never regained consciousness. She was pronounced dead at 3:27 p.m.
It was learned from the cousins that she had been in the water for some time before she was removed from the pool, deputies said.
Also assisting at the scene were members of the London-Maybee-Raisinville Volunteer Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.
