Illinois Boy, 5, Drowns In Backyard Pool, Police Say

An investigation continues for an Illinois child who drowned over the weekend.

Chance Shewmake, 5, of Bethalto, Illinois was pronounced dead on Saturday evening at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois.

The Bethalto Police Department received a 911 call Saturday evening from the boy's mother when she could not find him. Officers arrived and searched the property, finding the 5-year-old underwater in the home's backyard pool. First responders attempted to revive the boy at the scene and on the way to the hospital.

The autopsy conducted today did not indicate any sign of trauma. Toxicology tests were taken for the presence of alcohol or drugs, but test results have not been completed.
