Who Is Manchester United's 16 Year Old Prodigy Angel Gomes?

ANGEL GOMES has enjoyed a rapid rise through the Manchester United ranks.

He made his United debut last season - coming on as an 88th-minute substitute in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign.

In doing so he became the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953, and also became the first player born in 2000 to appear in the Premier League.

Who is Angel Gomes and how old is he?

Gomes – born in London on 31 August 2000 when his Portuguese dad, Gil, was playing for Hendon – joined United at 13 and has constantly played above his age group.

Indeed, he made his debut in the Under 18s at just 14 and two years later hit a hat-trick off the bench against Everton.

He also captained England’s Under 17s and celebrated his 16th birthday all in the same week.

He will turn 17 on August 31 and won the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award on Thursday.

Is he any good?

United believe could prove the brightest of the diamonds to force their way through the Old Trafford ranks.

United have always had the biggest reputation of all when it comes to developing their own talent.

Think the Babes of 1958. Think Fergie’s Fledglings. Think, of course, of the Class of 92. The signs are that pretty soon another name will be leaping off the conveyor belt.

The Red Devils youngster can play any of the attacking roles, but experienced eyes reckon he is a sure-fire No 10. At the highest level as well.

The teenage sensation already getting envious glances from Barcelona.

Academy coach Nicky Butt described Gomes' talents as "ridiculous", adding: "Angel is a young talented player who we have massive hopes for."

Which country is he eligible to play for?

He's played for England at various age groups, but he could also represent Portugal and Angola, because of his father.

It is most likely that he will remain with the Three Lions, though, as he has come through the ranks with England and has been given big responsibility at St George's Park.

The FA's chiefs might be counting their blessings in the future that Gomes' dad Gil was in the UK when his son was born, though, because he would not be eligible otherwise.

Gomes scored after four minutes and provided two assists in the Young Lions' 8-1 victory over Germany in October in the Croatia Cup.

Is Nani his cousin?

Yep. And there seems to be a lot of love between the two.

The pair regularly pay tribute to each other on social media.
